Advice

Do you have a go-to-advice-person? Yeah, I jumbled all those words together because it seems that a person like this is of immeasurable importance in our lives. I have one in my life, and it always seems like this individual knows what to do...like any situation I present them with is just as easily solved as soothing a sunburn with aloe or adding an extra dash of cinnamon to a cake mix. But with this blog I am seriously changing and growing (can you tell, can ya, can ya?) so I figured I would present my dilemma to my blogging friends, ones who see how I'm feeling each and every day--feel my mushiness? (I'm a big sap!) So here's the story.

Recently I have been presented with two options, one that will guarantee me a salary and benefits doing something that is tolerable, but not my passion in the slightest. Another opportunity is  offering me an unpaid internship, a chance to join a team and company that is a start-up and currently thriving...it's in an industry I love and it's something I can really envision myself doing in the future. With the possibility of a full time position after the internship in the fall I am wondering what to do. Take the money now and have a stable job or gamble and take a chance with a company that offers no guarantees only a shining beacon of opportunity?

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this! Have you ever been presented with a similar situation? Do you trust your head or heart? I always have trouble picking my passions and interests over "right" and "logical" decisions.

  1. This is an easy one... follow your passion! Money or not you want to do what you love every day.

  2. That's a tough situation, I feel like this might be where I am this time next year. If you think the internship opportunity is going to be really promising and it's something you are passionate about, you might should go for it! I am always drawn to picking my passions and interests over the logical thing but you don't want to be stuck doing something you don't love!

I hope everything works out for you and I will be thinking about you friend!

  3. Choosing between passion and stability is never an easy thing, but I definitely think you should go for the internship if that's where your heart lies. Think about it... a career is something that you have to do for the rest of your life... a job is something you have to wake up to every day... do you really want to wake up to something you don't like? To something that you tolerate because you have to? It doesn't sound like much fun to me :( Safety is comfortable, sure, but it also robs life of excitement and enjoyment. I say never be afraid to pursue something you love :D

  4. I think it's a tough choice. Are you financially sound to go for something with less benefits for now? I mean in the grand scheme of things I think following your heart will always be the right thing to do.

  5. Yes I have been in this situation more than once and now that I have been through it I know what not to do! If you can afford to take the internship that is your passion you really should. You are young, and if you can't do it now then when? When you do things based out of love and passion they always seem to work out to be better choices...wishing you luck in your decision! xo

  6. I think it's a tough choice, but I say go for what you love to do! You will be so much happier in the long run. Money can't do that for you.

  7. This is such a hard choice to choose from. When i have to make a big decision I ask myself: "what would I regret more?".

In your case: Would you regret missing out on having money, or missing out on something your passionate about? It's a risk to go with the unpaid internship, but it's also a risk to go for the paid non-passionate job. I think if it were me I would choose the unpaid internship, I feel like I would regret letting go of that opportunity more. Good luck making your choice!

  8. this is funny:) I just stumbled over here off of a comment window, you know... to meet new friends in this awesome blog world... and this is a great post. I'm just finishing a year and a half of what you've talked about. Working for amazing money, amazing benefits, but doing NOTHING that i'm passionate about. And I can tell you honestly, I lasted about the year and then i started getting driven crazy, other parts of my like started getting more demands (sometimes not reasonable demands) because I was lacking in my work life, my passions felt like they were withering away, and I felt like I wasn't an exciting person. None of these feelings were valid, but it was so interesting to feel what it was like when I wasn't feeding my passions.

I'd say, if you can afford it, do what you are passionate about. Your happiness is priceless:)
    Good luck with your decisions!!

  10. I always have the same dilemma! I wana do something I love but I want to know I'll be stable and not run into trouble later on down the road. More often than not I talk myself out of doing what I love.. and I regret it. You should do what you love simply because it IS what you love! You have been given the opportunity to do something you are passionate about! Of course in the end this is completely down to yourself but in my opinion if you can survive for a few months with the unpaid internship it will be worth it all in the end =) Do what your heart tells you to do! I love that quote btw! =)
