The Issue: Eating

Hey, all! I know the title of my post is a little drab, and I in no way am trying to indicate a problem with eating (disclosing that first and foremost!). I love eating, I love everything about it--the tastes, the textures, from the steam rising off my hot oats in the morning to the creamy and smooth smoothie I knock back after workouts. I am having a little trouble though and I'd love every one's advice.

Lately I have been hungry. Not just hungry, but HUNGRY! Can you see the difference. Actually, I won't lie to you all. I'm not all that hungry, I just want to eat...it seems to be spiraling out of control lately and it's scaring me. I remember myself overweight and so unhappy during my high school years and I never want to go back there again. I love looking in the mirror and feeling fit and confident. So if I feel this way when I look in the mirror why do I run to the kitchen, feeling like I have been in starvation mode, making 3 bags of popcorn and shoveling them in my mouth like an uncontrollable beast?

How do you deal with hunger? How do you practice healthy eating? I have been such an extremist (in every aspect of my life) and have gone from binge eating to hardly eating (I don't want to get back into that either). I'd love any advice how to deal with these feelings, or how to figure out this whole "eating" process, it truly has me stumped.

  1. I went on an eating binge too! I'm obsessed with peanut butter Puffins cereal and at 3/4 a box today! Usually I can stop, and sometimes drinking a bunch of water helps me, but some days I just NEED to indulge!

  2. I think if you truly feel hungry, then you should eat! Try choosing healthy snacks that will keep you full. Air popped un-buttered popcorn is actually a great choice. You can try sprinkling some parmesan cheese on top for an extra kick. Carrots with hummus, cottage cheese with fruit, peanut butter on a piece of toast...all great snacks. Don't try to deprive yourself because then you'll just end up binging. I think we all go through phases where our appetite is rearing and then a few days later it'll be back to normal.

  3. For me in order to stay clear from the "sit on the floor and eat through a box of cereal" beast I have to make sure I eat every two hours. Usually that keeps the monster at bay, if not then I know I truly am hungry, so I'll eat more but rather then doing it binging style (which makes me mentally groggy) I sit at the table and eat it like an extra meal.

  4. Aw honey, I'm sorry you are feeling that way! Usually when I get the urge to eat like that I try to eat fruits and veggies- because then at least I'm eating nutrient dense foods. I also drink a lot of water to make sure that I'm not actually dehydrated. Honestly, you could just be really stressed out and that is making you want food. Maybe you could go for a walk, splurge on a mani/pedi or massage, or do something for yourself that is relaxing!

  5. Whenever I feel the "bored hunger" feelings I drink a big glass of water and find a good book/blog to read. Anything to distract my mind from my hunger. Next thing you know you won't even have those feelings anymore.

If that doesn't work and you just have to eat try veggies and fruit. My go to is celery and peanut butter...yummm

  6. Hey girlie! I'll be answering your e-mail later today, but I definitely have days like this too. In fact, yesterday I was soooo hungry all day and just could. not. stop. eating. It was like I was constantly in the kitchen munching on something. Days like that are daunting, for sure, but for me they tend to all balance out. I'll have a few really hungry days, and then a few where I'm not really as interested in food. Or, you might just be dehydrated or tired. I know that if I don't drink/sleep enough, I tend to be really snacky the next day. When I do snack, though, it's usually on something like almonds or dark chocolate. I find that those tend to satisfy my more than if I were to grab some fruit or something.

  7. Hey Cassie, I am new to your blog and I wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed exploring it!

I feel this way a lot of times too, I swear I could eat all day everyday. I chew a lot of gum in between meals and snacks to keep my mouth busy because most of the time when I want to eat I am just bored. I love eating crunchy veggies like carrots, celery, and snap peas to avoid eating other crunchy things like potato chips etc.
